Hart Side for the brave

It wasn't looking like a good day, but Caroline and myself were up for taking the dog for a walk, and if we're going to go for a walk, why not try and add a Wainwright to our collection?  So we set off from the house.

Difficulty: 4.7
Walkers: Tim, Caroline, Piper
11:43, 0.0km 0h00 0m, Start (323)
14:02, 8.0km 2h18 530m, Hart Side (756, Wainwright)
16:03, 15.5km 4h19 630m, End (322)

No photos, just some videos that have been compressed too many times...
I remember Piper getting less and less keen on this walk as we got up higher and more exposed.  However, putting her waterproof coat on helped a lot and she was a bit more content to walk with us mad things.

This is Caroline and Piper at the top of Hart Side

The long walk back had the advantage that each step was getting us closer to home!  Piper was very happy to trot along in front, although she did get a but frustrated when I kept slipping in the mud.

Lots of rain and wind at Glenridding

The aim was to get to the top of the ridge and then along to Sheffield Pike, then back around and home on Greenside Road.

Difficulty: 1.4
Walkers: Tim, Caroline, Grace (17), Evie (13), Poppy (11), Piper
12:18, 0.0km 0h00 0m, Start (158)
13:06, 1.7km 0h47 281m, Glenridding Dodd (442, Wainwright)
15:01, 3.4km 2h42 284m, End (157)

Having made it up to Glenridding Dodd with high wind and heavy rain we decided to head back down again and spend some time trying to dry out at a pub in Glenridding.  Not the most fun walking I've ever had.

Falling over in the wind and rain

First climb up from the valley.

Beda Fell

Caroline practicing dog commands with Piper

Angletarn Pikes, Piper trying to spot the view

From Angletarn Pikes, this was the view across to Place Fell, doesn't look too bad, does it?

Well the wind increased and the rain was heavy, but we battled to the top.  This video shows Poppy wisely crouching down if she feels herself getting blown over.

On the way back home, out of the worst of the wind and rain, we look a little damp.

The Nab

We had done some walking from Hartsop before, but never quite made it to The Nab, so the only thing for it was for a there and back walk with this as the sole target.

Difficulty: 4.0
Walkers: Tim, Caroline, Grace (17), Evie (13), Poppy (11), Piper
11:41, 0.0km 0h00 0m, Start (178)
13:18, 3.4km 1h36 527m, Rest Dodd (696, Wainwright, Hewitt)
14:34, 5.4km 2h53 590m, The Nab (576, Wainwright)
16:25, 10.4km 4h43 777m, End (177)

Parked in the same carpark as before, at the top of the village.

Enjoyable walk up, and it was looking much nicer than the day before.

Crossing the bridge at the bottom of Hayeswater

Top of Rest Dodd, looking south over Hayeswater.

Rest Dodd, this time looking towards Ullswater

Very nice lunch stop just off the top.

At The Nab.  Shortly after this we thought this was isolated enough to let Piper off lead, we'd not seen any one or any animals all the way from Rest Dodd in the distance.  Fairly straight away she galloped off down the ridge to the left, completing out of sight.  I brought out her whistle and called her back.  After around 30seconds she returns, running full pelt back up the hillside, having found a group of deer that she was herding in front of her.  Thankfully her recall at that point was good and she came running back to me, obviously awesomely pleased with her work.  We didn't let her off lead again.

Sun came out, giving this view looking back at The Nab

Hallin Fell and a loop in the rain

First of the planned walks on the south shore of Ullswater.  We hadn't walked in this area before, so had quite a bit of distance to cover.

Difficulty: 5.5
Walkers: Tim, Caroline, Grace (17), Evie (13), Poppy (11), Piper
10:48, 0.0km 0h00 0m, Start (223)
11:06, 0.8km 0h17 160m, Hallin Fell (388, Wainwright)
12:14, 3.1km 1h25 375m, Steel Knotts (432, Wainwright)
14:05, 7.0km 3h16 721m, Wether Hill (671, Wainwright)
14:25, 8.5km 3h36 769m, Loadpot Hill (672, Hewitt, Wainwright)
15:23, 11.6km 4h34 807m, Arthur's Pike (533, Wainwright)
15:48, 13.0km 4h59 843m, Bonscale Pike (524, Wainwright)
17:10, 16.1km 6h21 925m, End (223)

First hill was a 'there and back' trip up Hallin Fell, the way up gave a great view of where we were going next.

Top of Hallin Fell

Steel Knotts

Stop for lunch

Piper was very happy as the lunch stop was near a stream.

Loadpot Hill, not a great view

Arthur's Pike

No photos after this as it was raining too hard, however Dave took this video of me trying to demonstrate what the weather was like

Gowbarrow Fell

First walk, leaving from the house to capture Gowbarrow Fell, and our first view looking over Ullswater.

Difficulty: 3.1
Walkers: Tim, Caroline, Grace (17), Evie (13), Poppy (11), Piper
11:48, 0.0km 0h00 0m, Start (322)
13:19, 4.4km 1h31 245m, Gowbarrow Fell (481, Wainwright)
15:46, 10.6km 3h57 396m, End (323)

We'd let Piper off lead for a short time in an enclosed field and she went a bit nuts, so we kept her on lead after that...

Gowbarrow Fell

I'm not sure whether Piper or Grace was keener to get in the water
